Router Bypass

Hi all,

We are running into some issues with trying to get the router connected to the very limited accessibility of the university internet. Would we be able to bypass the router by getting a small network switch and just hardwiring the ethernet that way? (the units will likely be placed in range to run cables to). Is the router there just for ease when the units are more independent of buildings or are they required for specific software functions? Our second AZ unit at the high school will likely also run into firewalls and protections with trying to connect a router to the school district internet.

Hi Gavin,

The PANOPTES router provides a local network within the unit, to which both Rasbery Pis connect, and to which you can connect to drive/test the unit. The router has a single connection to the outside: this is the connection to your university network. Whichever way you wire the internal network within the PANOPTES unit, you will need this connection to the outside. From the university network, you should only need a single connection point to the router.

@GavinMoriarty what happens when you try to connect it? And have you tried both the wireless and wired connection to the university?

wtgee When trying to connect to the wifi it will just spin forever, stop, and disconnect the router. Hardwiring it I was able to at least set up the new name and everything but when I connected to the panoptes-net it wouldn’t even load google. When I try to set up the Pi’s it says it fails to connect to the network so I cannot even download the desktops. We just got the Pi’s on the network by their MAC’s but they still won’t connect even directly to the school network, so that’s another issue.

It sounds like you are describing the Pi connecting to the router. I’m curious what you see when you log into the router admin page, by default available at http://192.168.8.1

And there is ideally a hardwire connection from the school to the router going into the WAN port, then from the router to the Pi via the LAN port.
