Camera exposure settings with the 85 mm Len

Hi Folks,

I plan to test my Cannon setup with the 85 mm lens tonight. Can you suggest inital settings for deep sky photography?

Thanks,

Tom

Do you have tracking ?
If not, keep exposure time short: it will only take a few secs for stars to streak across several pixels. Open the lens fully (F/1.4) and push ISO high (1600). You should be able to take pictures of star clusters, bright nebulae etc…
If you have tracking, then you have lots more flexibility. You can take deeper longer exposures.

Note that focusing the lens well can be tricky.

Good Morning!,

I as sorry I did not provide more details. I do have a iEQ30pro as well as a barn door tracker I wish to experiment with. I would be looking to start at between 30 and 60 second exposures. My sky conditions generally do not allow for much longer than 60 seconds with my ccd setup. I do understand tweaking the focus can be a challenge! I am just waiting on an electronic shutter controller and clear sky.

Thanks,

Tom
